Dr. Virunya Bhat is a Senior Scientist within the Mechanistic and Computational Biology practice at ToxStrategies in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. She is a board-certified toxicologist with 20 years of experience conducting human health risk assessments and deriving health-based guidance values for industrial chemicals and other contaminants in food and drinking water, within mode-of-action and key-event frameworks. Dr. Bhat is well versed on regulatory compliance requirements across multiple consumer product sectors. Given her broad understanding of international approaches, she has been a frequently invited subject-matter expert in toxicology and risk assessment and has served as an expert reviewer for the World Health Organization, Health Canada, and the California Environmental Protection Agency. She has also coordinated international expert working groups on genotoxicity, dose-response modeling, chemical-specific adjustment factors, and guidelines for drinking-water quality.
Prior to joining ToxStrategies, Dr. Bhat held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility at an independent public health organization whose primary focus is to review product formulations and manufacturing processes and offer third-party certification, ensuring that the final product complies with standards for safety, quality, and performance. She has broad experience conducting toxicological risk assessments and ingredient and material formulation reviews for consumer and personal care products, botanicals, and pesticides, including residues, impurities, and transformation by-products. This work has included critical interpretation of human and animal toxicology data. Within qualitative and quantitative risk assessment paradigms, Dr. Bhat has incorporated physiologically based pharmacokinetic, life-stage susceptibility, (Q)SAR/computational, and read-across modeling. She also has specialized experience with traditional and newer Benchmark Dose models that include transcriptomic and Bayesian dose-response approaches.
Dr. Bhat is a primary or contributing author of more than 100 peer-reviewed human health risk assessments for unregulated drinking-water contaminants, food, and consumer product ingredients, additives, contaminants, and by-products, according to a host of international guidelines (e.g., USEPA, USFDA, OECD, European Commission, WHO).
