ToxStrategies risk communication expert speaks on oil shale development



Dr. Bill Rish spoke at the Ohio Shale Policy and Technology Symposium, sponsored by Ohio University, on April 4, 2018. As an invited member of the panel at the Plenary Session (Managing Risk in Shale Development), Dr. Rish presented “The Role of Risk Communication in Shale Development.” [View presentation here.]  The panel provided four different perspectives on the risks of shale oil and gas development in Ohio: geotechnical, economic, legal, and communication of risks. Dr. Rish explained, with examples from the Utica and Marcellus shale development regions, how the perception and acceptance of risk by stakeholders plays a key role in risk management. He recommended ways to improve meaningful dialogue, trust, and feelings of empowerment by communities affected by shale gas development.
