New study of aspartame and cancer finds no connection

A new article published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology concludes that the totality of evidence does not support a link between human consumption of aspartame and occurrence of cancer, addressing recent controversy arising from animal cancer bioassay results, which were interpreted by the Ramazzini Institute as indicating such a link. ToxStrategies scientists conducted a comprehensive systematic review of the scientific literature to assess the overall findings regarding an association between aspartame consumption and carcinogenicity. They reviewed epidemiological and cancer studies conducted in animal models, along with more than 1360 mechanistic data sets, finding “no clear or consistent signals of any tumor type, or biologically plausible mechanism leading to carcinogenicity following aspartame exposure.”
